If you have a thing for elegance and earthiness (and maybe Tetris), you’ll love House Boz. Designed by the estimable Nico van der Meulen Architects in Pretoria, South Africa, this home is stunning.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The winner of several architectural awards—including the Lafarge Award for decorative use of concrete—House Boz is both severe and inviting. Its use of hard angles, large flat surfaces, and industrial materials like glass and steel give it a distinctly mid-century feel. Its warmth, however, comes from the relationship created between the home and its natural surroundings. Light streams in through large plate glass windows; slender grass, rolling hills, and wild brushes are framed by the home’s own architecture.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][image_with_animation image_url=”1050″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self” delay=”0″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]The materials blur the distinction between man and nature. While the lower half of the home incorporates itself into the land, the upper rooms look striking upon the pale, Pretorian sky. The gabion walls, hand cut from quartzite rock, were excavated from the site of the home. The home is literally infused with the land on which it stands.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][image_with_animation image_url=”1049″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self” delay=”0″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]The result is a work of art, feeling at once natural and manufactured. And in the words of Francis Bacon, Ars est homo, additus naturae. “Art is man, added to nature.”
